I have been fascinated for years with the Cuban agricultural model. As described in books and the documentary "The Power of Community" http://www.powerofcommunity.org/cm/index.php
the people of Cuba changed how they grew food after the collapse of Soviet communism. Today, I stumbled across this video about an agricultural scientist who understands the power of participatory plant breeding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB_uvOnXteI&feature=player_embedded
He describes briefly in this video how the power dynamic between scientists and farmers have favored the knowledge of the scientist, and how he recognizes the immense knowledge of the farmers. He has encouraged farmer seed swapping to support genetic diversity and knowledge sharing. Check out the video, because people like him are the future of plant breeding.
